Supermicro has unveiled the ASG-4116S-NU160R at FMS 2026 — a 4U chassis packing 160 NVMe SSD bays. Yes, 160. That's a staggering amount of flash density in a single rack unit footprint that, until recently, would have needed an entire cabinet of spinning rust.

The server targets enterprise and hyperscale storage workloads: think all-flash arrays for AI training data, high-frequency trading, or massive CDN caches. It's not a homelab purchase (unless your electricity bill is someone else's problem), but it matters to us for a couple of reasons.

Why homelabbers should care

First, trickle-down hardware. Every time enterprise pushes to a new density tier, the previous generation gets surplused faster. Servers that were "cutting edge" with 24 NVMe bays are now being decommissioned to make room for kit like this. That means more affordable used NVMe-capable platforms landing on eBay and r/homelabsales over the next 12–18 months.

Second, drive pricing. Massive deployments at this scale drive NVMe SSD production volumes up and per-unit costs down. Enterprise pulls of 2TB and 4TB U.2/E1.S drives should become increasingly common and cheap.

Caveats

This is a show floor product — pricing and actual ship dates aren't confirmed. The power draw will be eye-watering, and the chassis alone will likely cost more than most people's entire racks. Nobody's racking this at home.

But if you're planning a storage-heavy homelab build in the next year or so, the knock-on effects are worth watching. Keep an eye on enterprise NVMe pull prices — they're only going one way.

If you're already picking up cheap enterprise NVMe pulls, you'll want a way to test and repurpose them. Our M.2 NVMe SSD Enclosure – USB-C 10Gbps with Magnetic Closure makes quick work of checking drives over USB-C before slotting them into a build.
