Steam Deck LCD as a Raspberry Pi Display via HAT
Jeff Geerling has managed to get the Steam Deck's 7-inch 1280×800 LCD working as a Raspberry Pi display using a dedicated HAT adapter. If you've been hunting for a decent, compact screen for a Pi-based homelab dashboard or headless server console, this is worth a look.
Why homelabbers should care
Replacement Steam Deck LCD panels are available on AliExpress and eBay for surprisingly little — often under £20. That gets you a high-quality IPS panel with good viewing angles and a resolution that puts most cheap Pi screens to shame. Pair it with the right driver board/HAT and you've got a proper status display, a KVM console, or a front panel for a rack-mounted Pi.
The appeal here is recycling capable hardware at a fraction of the cost of purpose-built Pi displays, which often charge a premium for worse specs.
Caveats
This is still a tinkerer's project. You'll need the specific HAT or driver board — availability may be limited depending on when you read this. Geerling's write-up covers the wiring and software config, but expect to spend a bit of time getting everything dialled in. It's not a plug-and-play solution yet. There's also the question of a case or mount — you'll likely be 3D-printing something or bodging a bracket.
If you'd rather skip the display project entirely but still need a way to manage a headless Pi or server, an HDMI capture card is the simpler route. Our MS2131 HDMI Capture Card – 1080p Video & Audio for Headless Servers does the job for £20.99 and works with any machine that has HDMI out.
