If you run Raspberry Pis, security cameras, or any SBC that boots from an SD card, you already know the pain of a dead card killing your uptime. Now someone's done the legwork: nearly 300 SD cards stress-tested over three years, with some genuinely surprising results.

Why homelabbers should care

SD card failure is one of the most common homelab annoyances. Pi-hole, Home Assistant, OctoPrint — all regularly chew through cheap cards. This test gives us actual data instead of forum guesswork about which brands hold up under sustained write loads.

The headline takeaway: brand reputation doesn't always match reality. Some budget cards outlasted premium ones, and supposed "endurance" models didn't always live up to the label. Samsung and SanDisk had strong showings overall, but there were individual failures from every manufacturer.

Caveats worth noting

This is one person's test with one workload pattern. Real-world conditions vary — temperature, write patterns, and controller differences all matter. It's excellent directional data, not a guarantee your specific card will last. Also worth remembering that even the best SD card is still an SD card — for anything critical, booting from NVMe or USB SSD remains the smarter long-term move.

What to do with this

If you're still running SD cards in your SBC fleet (plenty of us are), use this data to guide your next purchase. For Pi projects, Samsung PRO Endurance microSD cards came out well and are specifically designed for continuous write scenarios.
