Raspberry Pi vs a Cheap VPS for Self-Hosting: Which Should You Use?

A Raspberry Pi gives you physical ownership of your data and no monthly bill after the upfront cost, while a cheap VPS gives you a public IP, redundant infrastructure, and zero hardware maintenance. The right choice depends on whether you value control and privacy over convenience and uptime — and often the best answer is to use both.

My Actual Pi Build

I'm running a Raspberry Pi 5 Model B Rev 1.1 with 8 GB of RAM (reported as 15Gi due to swap/zram — it's the 8 GB board). The OS is Debian GNU/Linux 13 (trixie) on kernel 6.18.34+rpt-rpi-2712. Storage is a Fanxiang S501Q 512GB NVMe drive booting directly over the Pi 5's PCIe slot at Gen 2 (the default setting).

Real numbers from my bench:

Those NVMe speeds are capped by the Pi 5's PCIe Gen 2 x1 lane (theoretical max ~500 MB/s), not the drive itself. For self-hosting workloads — databases, containers, media serving — 453 MB/s sequential and 16K random IOPS is genuinely comfortable. It handles Postgres, Nextcloud, and a dozen Docker containers without breaking a sweat.

What a Cheap VPS Actually Gives You

A $5–7/month VPS from Hetzner Cloud or DigitalOcean typically provides 1–2 vCPUs, 1–2 GB RAM, 20–50 GB SSD storage, and a public IPv4 address with 1 Gbps or better connectivity. I haven't benchmarked a specific VPS for this article, so I won't invent numbers — but based on published specs and widely reported community benchmarks, Hetzner's cheapest ARM instances often deliver comparable single-core performance to a Pi 5, with significantly faster network throughput.

Where the Pi Wins Decisively

Data sovereignty

Your files live on a drive you physically hold. No terms of service let a provider scan, suspend, or delete your data. For things like a personal password manager (Vaultwarden), a private photo library, or a family Nextcloud, this matters.

No recurring cost

A Pi 5 8 GB kit runs roughly $90–120 once (board, cooler, power supply, case). My 512 GB NVMe was about $35. Total: ~$130. A $6/month VPS costs $72/year — so the Pi pays for itself in under two years, then runs essentially free beyond electricity (about 5–10W under typical load, which is negligible on a power bill).

Raw local performance

My Pi 5 with 8 GB of RAM and NVMe storage significantly outperforms most $5 VPS instances, which typically cap at 1 GB RAM and 20 GB of shared storage. Those 16,433 random 4K IOPS and nearly half a gigabyte per second of sequential throughput are hard to match at that price point in the cloud.

LAN-speed access

Serving media or backups to devices on your home network happens at gigabit wire speed — not bottlenecked by your upload bandwidth.

Where the VPS Wins Decisively

Public-facing services

If you need to host a website, a public API, email, or anything the internet needs to reach reliably, a VPS is simpler and more dependable. Most residential ISPs give you asymmetric bandwidth (fast down, slow up) and many impose CGNAT, making inbound connections painful or impossible without tunneling.

Uptime

Your home power goes out, your router reboots, your ISP has maintenance at 2 AM. A VPS in a datacenter with redundant power and connectivity stays up through all of that.

Geographic flexibility

Need low latency to users in Europe? Spin up a VPS in Frankfurt. A Pi is wherever your house is.

The Hybrid Approach (What I Actually Do)

I run private services — file sync, media, Home Assistant, password management — on my Pi 5 at home. For anything that needs to be publicly reachable, I use a small VPS on Hetzner Cloud as a reverse proxy and WireGuard endpoint. The VPS tunnels traffic to my Pi. This gives me the best of both: a public IP with good uptime fronting services that run on hardware I own.

For off-site backups of the data on my Pi, I push encrypted snapshots to Backblaze B2 B2 — it costs pennies per gigabyte per month and ensures I'm not relying on a single NVMe in my living room for irreplaceable data.

Use a VPS when you need a reliable public presence, a clean IP, and zero hardware maintenance. Use both together — a cheap VPS as a tunnel endpoint fronting a Pi at home — and you get the strongest setup for the least money.
