For homelabbers, this is genuinely useful context. A Proxmox or TrueNAS box doesn't need bleeding-edge silicon — it needs reliable cores and plenty of affordable RAM. An AM4 Ryzen 5 5600 or an Intel i5-12400 paired with cheap, plentiful DDR4 still handles virtualisation, Docker stacks, and NAS duties without breaking a sweat. The caveat? "RAM crisis" is a bit of clickbait — DDR5 prices have risen but they're not unobtainable, and they'll normalise eventually. If you're building something you want to last five-plus years, locking into DDR4 does cap your upgrade path. But if you're being honest about what a homelab actually needs versus what's fun to spec, DDR4 platforms remain the sweet spot for value.
