We've all got one — a laptop that crawled to a halt under Windows 11, now gathering dust in a drawer. XDA's latest piece makes a solid case for slapping Linux on it and putting it back to work as a home server.
The appeal is obvious. A laptop comes with its own UPS (the battery), built-in screen for initial setup, low idle power draw, and — crucially — costs you nothing if it's already in your house. Install Debian, Ubuntu Server, or Proxmox and you've got a perfectly capable box for Docker containers, Pi-hole, media serving, or lightweight virtualisation.
Why homelabbers should care
Entry cost is effectively zero. Even a 6th-gen Intel i5 with 8GB RAM handles most self-hosted services without breaking a sweat, and you skip the "what hardware do I buy?" paralysis that stops many people starting out. Power consumption typically sits between 10–25W at idle, which is pennies a day on your electricity bill.
Honest caveats
Laptops aren't perfect servers. Expansion is limited — usually one drive slot and soldered RAM. Thermals can be an issue if you push them hard 24/7; years of dust won't help. And if the battery is swollen or dead, remove it entirely rather than leaving a fire risk plugged in permanently. You'll also want to configure the BIOS to boot on AC power restore so it comes back after an outage.
