At hyperscale, Meta retires servers every few years but the DDR4 sticks inside them still have years of life left. Their solution is a bridge chip that translates DDR5 signalling back to DDR4, letting older DIMMs slot into newer boards with a modest performance trade-off.
You won't be buying this chip yourself โ it's a custom Meta design for their own data centres. But the knock-on effects matter:
- Used DDR4 ECC pricing could shift. If hyperscalers start reusing DDR4 internally instead of dumping it, the flood of cheap second-hand server RAM on eBay might slow down over the next year or two.

And whether this actually tightens the used DDR4 supply or barely makes a dent is anyone's guess at this stage.
