Kioxia has officially launched the CM10 series, one of the first PCIe Gen6 enterprise SSDs to hit the market. These drives promise sequential reads up to around 28 GB/s, roughly doubling what current Gen5 drives deliver. Capacities are expected to range up to 32TB in a standard U.2/E3.S form factor.

Why homelabbers should care

You won't be buying these any time soon — and that's fine. What matters is the knock-on effect. Every new generation of enterprise storage pushes the previous one down the food chain faster. Gen5 drives are still eye-wateringly expensive for home use, but the arrival of Gen6 hardware accelerates the depreciation curve on Gen4 and Gen5 kit. If you're watching eBay or the surplus market for NVMe upgrades, this is the kind of upstream movement that eventually puts better drives in your NAS or VM host for less.

It's also worth noting that no consumer platform supports PCIe Gen6 yet. AMD and Intel are still rolling out Gen5 on desktop, and most homelab-friendly boards top out at Gen4. So this is firmly enterprise-first territory for now.

Honest caveats

Pricing hasn't been disclosed, but expect serious enterprise money. Power draw and cooling requirements at these speeds are non-trivial too — these aren't going in a quiet mini PC under your desk. And Gen6 ecosystem support (motherboards, HBAs, backplanes) is essentially non-existent outside bleeding-edge server platforms.
