Intel is expanding memory support on the Xeon 6 platform with Gen 2 MRDIMMs and higher-speed DDR5 RDIMMs, as reported by ServeTheHome. This matters for anyone planning a serious homelab upgrade in the next year or two.

What's changing?

MRDIMMs (Multiplexer Registered DIMMs) are the next step in server memory โ€” they sit between standard RDIMMs and the eye-wateringly expensive HBM options. Gen 2 MRDIMMs promise significantly higher bandwidth than what's currently available, which is relevant for memory-intensive workloads like large VMs, databases, and AI inference tasks that homelabbers are increasingly experimenting with.

Alongside MRDIMMs, Intel is also adding support for faster standard DDR5 RDIMMs on the same Xeon 6 platform. This is arguably the more practical news for most of us โ€” faster RDIMMs will be far more affordable and widely available than MRDIMMs.

Why homelabbers should care

Xeon 6 (Granite Rapids and Sierra Forest) is shaping up to be a strong platform for high-density homelab builds, particularly the efficiency-focused E-cores. More memory bandwidth means better performance per watt for virtualisation-heavy setups. If you're currently weighing up a platform for a new build, this confirms Intel is committed to evolving Xeon 6 rather than leaving it as a dead end.

The honest caveats

MRDIMMs will almost certainly remain enterprise-priced for the foreseeable future โ€” don't expect to see them on eBay at homelab-friendly prices any time soon. The faster RDIMMs are the realistic win here. And of course, none of this is shipping yet; it's a roadmap update, not something you can buy today.

What to do

If you're planning a Xeon 6 build, this is reassuring news โ€” the platform has legs. If you're buying now, current DDR5 RDIMMs on Intel Xeon 6 compatible DDR5 RDIMM will still serve you well, and the upgrade path is looking healthy.
