Intel is expanding memory support on the Xeon 6 platform with Gen 2 MRDIMMs and higher-speed DDR5 RDIMMs, as reported by ServeTheHome. This matters for anyone planning a serious homelab upgrade in the next year or two.
What's changing?
MRDIMMs (Multiplexer Registered DIMMs) are the next step in server memory โ they sit between standard RDIMMs and the eye-wateringly expensive HBM options. Gen 2 MRDIMMs promise significantly higher bandwidth than what's currently available, which is relevant for memory-intensive workloads like large VMs, databases, and AI inference tasks that homelabbers are increasingly experimenting with.
