If you're running a GPU in your homelab — whether for Plex transcoding, Jellyfin, AI inference or a VM gaming rig — you've probably looked at undervolting to tame noise and power draw. The problem is undervolting means messing with voltage-frequency curves, stability testing, and redoing it all after every driver update.
XDA's latest piece makes a compelling case for just setting a power limit instead. The results are almost identical — lower temps, quieter fans, meaningful wattage savings — and it takes about 30 seconds.
On NVIDIA cards you can do it in nvidia-smi (perfect for headless servers):

AMD users can tweak it via amdgpu sysfs or ROCM tools. Either way, you're capping the card's total board power rather than hand-tuning a curve. Performance loss is typically in the single digits — often negligible for transcoding or inference workloads that don't constantly hammer peak clocks.
Why homelabbers should care:
- Lower electricity bills. A 50W reduction on a 24/7 card saves roughly £40–50 a year at UK rates.
- Less heat into your rack or cupboard. Especially relevant in summer or small spaces.
- Quieter fans. GPU blower coolers are the worst offenders; a power cap keeps them civilised.
- Dead simple to persist. A one-line cron job or systemd unit and you're done.
Caveats: This isn't magic — if your workload genuinely pegs the GPU at 100% sustained (heavy AI training, for instance), you will feel the cap. And the sweet spot varies per card, so spend five minutes benchmarking your actual workload at a few limits.
If your GPU is pulling more power than it needs to, this is the lowest-effort win going. For cards like the Intel Arc B580 or NVIDIA Tesla P4 commonly found in homelabs, it's well worth a quick test this weekend.
