ServeTheHome has just published a full review of the GMKtec EVO-X3, a compact mini PC built around an AMD platform that supports up to 128GB of DDR5 RAM — a spec that immediately makes it interesting for anyone running local LLMs or other memory-hungry AI workloads at home.

For homelabbers, the pitch is straightforward: you get a small, relatively quiet box with enough RAM to load decent-sized language models entirely in memory, without needing a full tower or a GPU costing four figures. It's a CPU-inference play — you won't match a beefy Nvidia card for speed, but for experimentation, RAG pipelines, or always-on local AI assistants, 128GB of system RAM in a mini PC form factor is genuinely useful.

Caveats worth noting. GMKtec isn't a household name, and ServeTheHome's review flags the usual concerns you'd expect from a smaller Chinese brand — BIOS maturity, long-term support, and build quality consistency can vary. You're also paying a premium for the compact form factor compared to building a similar-spec Ryzen box in a standard case. And CPU inference is slow compared to GPU inference, so temper your expectations if you're coming from an RTX setup.

That said, if you've been eyeing something compact for a dedicated AI node, a Proxmox host with serious RAM headroom, or even a beefy Docker box, this is worth a look. The 128GB ceiling puts it ahead of most mini PCs in its class.

If you do pick one up, you'll likely want to migrate or clone existing drives — our M.2 NVMe/NGFF SSD Enclosure – USB-C 10Gbps for Drive Cloning makes that painless over USB-C. And for a headless setup, grab an HDMI dummy plug or our MS2131 HDMI Capture Card – 1080p Video & Audio for Headless Servers to keep remote access smooth.

Read the full review at ServeTheHome before buying — it's thorough and honest about where this box shines and where it doesn't.
