Server memory is about to take a serious leap. As covered by ServeTheHome, vendors have been showing off DDR5-8000 RDIMMs alongside second-generation MRDIMMs hitting DDR5-12800 speeds. That's a substantial jump from the DDR5-4800 and DDR5-5600 RDIMMs most of us are seeing in current-gen server and workstation platforms.

Why homelabbers should pay attention

You're not buying DDR5-12800 MRDIMMs any time soon — these are aimed squarely at hyperscale and HPC workloads, and the pricing will be eye-watering when they land. But this matters for a practical reason: every new generation of server memory pushes the previous one down the used market faster.

We saw this play out with DDR4. Once DDR5 platforms became mainstream in datacentres, DDR4 ECC pricing collapsed, and homelabbers cleaned up on cheap 32GB and 64GB RDIMMs. The same cycle is already underway with early DDR5 ECC sticks. As DDR5-8000 platforms start shipping in the next year or so, expect current DDR5-4800 RDIMMs to begin appearing on the secondary market at much friendlier prices.

The honest caveats

MRDIMMs are a different beast entirely — they require specific motherboard support and are unlikely to ever be relevant to home labs. DDR5-8000 RDIMMs will initially target next-gen Xeon and EPYC platforms that won't be in anyone's spare room for years. And "on display" doesn't mean "on sale" — timelines for volume production are still fuzzy.

What to do now

If you're building or upgrading a DDR5 homelab server today, don't wait around for these speeds — buy what's available and affordable now. If you're still running DDR4, sit tight and keep watching the used market. The trickle-down is real, and it's only going to accelerate.
