If you've got a retired business laptop gathering dust, it might be your next media server. XDA's piece walks through running a full Plex/Jellyfin setup on a basic business laptop with no discrete graphics card – and it handles transcoding just fine.
The secret sauce is Intel Quick Sync Video (QSV), baked into most Intel iGPUs from roughly 7th-gen onwards. Even a modest i5 or i3 in a ThinkPad or EliteBook can hardware-transcode multiple 1080p streams without breaking a sweat. Power draw sits around 15-30W at the wall – a fraction of what a tower server pulls.
For homelabbers, this is genuinely practical. Business laptops like the ThinkPad T480, HP EliteBook 840 G5, or Dell Latitude 5490 regularly show up on eBay UK for £80-£150. They come with built-in UPS (the battery), a screen for initial setup, and run near-silent. Chuck in a cheap 1TB or 2TB SSD for your media library, or hang external storage off USB 3.0, and you're sorted.
Caveats? Storage expandability is limited compared to a proper NAS – you're stuck with one or two drive slots at best. If you need tens of terabytes, you'll be daisy-chaining external drives or looking at a dedicated box instead. And while QSV handles 1080p transcoding brilliantly, 4K HEVC to 1080p can push older chips. Check your specific CPU's Quick Sync capabilities before committing.
It's not going to replace a Synology or a proper rack server for heavy workloads, but as a low-cost, low-power entry point for media serving – or even lightweight Docker hosting – a business laptop is hard to beat on value.
