If your homelab lives in a closet, spare bedroom, or behind a couch, a standard 36-inch-deep server rack is absurd overkill. A short-depth rack under 18 inches accommodates single-board computers, patch panels, network switches, and small NAS units while keeping a footprint your landlord (or partner) won't object to.
Why Short-Depth Matters in an Apartment
Standard 4-post racks exist for full-size 1U/2U servers with redundant power supplies. Most apartment homelabs don't run those. They run a Raspberry Pi or two, a mini PC, a managed switch, maybe a UPS, and a patch panel. None of that equipment exceeds 10–12 inches of depth, so a 36-inch rack wastes two feet of space in every direction for no reason.

This is a freestanding open-frame rack, reportedly about 18 inches deep (right at the limit). The 12U height gives you meaningful room to grow. Published specs put the weight capacity around 200 lbs. Open frames provide excellent airflow but zero noise isolation and no dust protection. If your rack lives in a closet with a door, that's fine. If it's in a living room, expect visible cable runs and audible fan noise from anything with active cooling.
Tripp Lite 6U Wall Mount Rack
At 6U, this is the smallest option here. Based on specs, the usable depth is around 14.5 inches. Tripp Lite's build quality is generally well-regarded. The limitation is straightforward: six rack units fills up fast. A patch panel, a switch, and a shelf for a Pi leaves you with maybe 2–3U of space. Fine if you know your setup is small and staying small. A poor choice if you're likely to add a second node or a UPS later.
AC Infinity RACK KIYO 9U
AC Infinity's KIYO line reportedly includes integrated quiet fans with speed controllers. Published depth is about 15.5 inches. The aesthetic is noticeably cleaner than the NavePoint or Tripp Lite — tempered glass front, matte black finish. Based on user reports, the included fans run around 18–25 dBA, which is genuinely quiet. The trade-off is price: it typically runs $30–80 more than the NavePoint for similar internal volume.
My Actual Build Inside a Short-Depth Setup
My primary node is a Raspberry Pi 5 Model B Rev 1.1 with 15 GB of usable RAM, running Debian GNU/Linux 13 (trixie) on kernel 6.18.34+rpt-rpi-2712. Boot and storage run off a Fanxiang S501Q 512GB NVMe drive connected over the Pi 5's PCIe slot at Gen 2 (the default).
Real measured storage performance:

Thermal performance in a rack shelf context matters because enclosed cabinets restrict airflow. These numbers were taken at an ambient room temperature around 22°C. Inside a fully enclosed rack without integrated fans, I'd expect idle temps to climb 5–8°C based on general thermal behavior in restricted airflow. For most apartment homelabs, the NavePoint 9U or AC Infinity KIYO 9U hit the sweet spot — enclosed, wall-mountable, and deep enough for SBCs, switches, and a UPS without wasting space. Go KIYO if integrated quiet fans and aesthetics justify the price premium; go NavePoint if you'd rather save $50 and add your own fans later. The StarTech 12U open frame makes sense only if you have a closet to hide it in and want room to grow.
