ServeTheHome has published a detailed review of the ASRock Creator Radeon AI Pro R9700, and it's worth paying attention to if you're running (or planning to run) local LLMs in your homelab.

This is AMD's play for workstation-class AI inference. The card is based on the RDNA 3.5 architecture with 16GB of unified memory on a single-slot, blower-style cooler — the kind of form factor that actually fits in a rack or compact workstation without drama. It targets the gap between consumer GPUs and the eye-watering cost of NVIDIA's professional lineup.

Why homelabbers should care

Local inference is one of the fastest-growing homelab use cases. Running models like Llama 3 or Mistral locally means no API costs and full data privacy. The key spec here is that 16GB VRAM — enough for decent-sized models, though you'll hit limits with anything above ~13B parameters at full precision. The blower cooler is a genuine plus for enclosed cases and rack setups where recirculating hot air is a real problem.

AMD's ROCm software stack has improved significantly, but let's be honest: it still lags behind NVIDIA's CUDA ecosystem. You'll spend more time fiddling with compatibility, and not every inference framework supports ROCm out of the box. The ServeTheHome review covers real-world benchmarks, so check their numbers before committing.

The caveat

Pricing positions this firmly in "professional" territory. If you're after raw inference bang-for-buck, a used NVIDIA card with equivalent VRAM may still win on the software side. But if you're already in the AMD camp or want to avoid the NVIDIA tax on principle, this is one of the most homelab-friendly pro AI cards available right now.

If you're building an inference rig, you'll likely want a decent USB-C cable for peripherals and fast storage access — 240W USB-C Fast-Charging & Data Cable – Braided, LED Indicator is handy to have on the bench. For model storage, an M.2 NVMe SSD in a fast enclosure keeps things snappy.
