ServeTheHome has published a full review of the ASRock Rack SORANOD8-2L2T, one of the first motherboards built around AMD's EPYC 8005 "Sorano" processors. If you've been watching the EPYC embedded space for your next homelab server build, this is worth paying attention to.

What is it?

The SORANOD8-2L2T is a deep-micro-ATX board with eight DDR5 DIMM slots, dual 10GbE plus dual 1GbE networking, and support for the new EPYC 8005 series. These Sorano chips are based on Zen 5 cores but positioned as cost-optimised embedded parts — think lower TDPs and competitive pricing compared to full-fat EPYC.

For homelabbers, the appeal is straightforward: proper server-grade features (IPMI/BMC, ECC memory, PCIe Gen 5) in a platform that doesn't demand a massive power budget or rack infrastructure.

Why it matters

The EPYC 8004 (Siena) line already attracted homelabbers wanting efficient, many-core machines for virtualisation and storage. The 8005 series refreshes this with Zen 5 cores and potentially better single-thread performance — handy if you're running a mix of VMs and containers where not everything scales across cores.

Dual 10GbE on-board is a genuine highlight. If you're running a NAS or doing VM traffic, that saves you a NIC straight away.

Caveats

Availability and pricing in the UK remain the big unknowns. EPYC embedded boards tend to trickle into the channel slowly, and you'll likely pay a premium over consumer gear. DDR5 ECC RDIMMs aren't cheap either. This is firmly "serious build" territory — if you're after a budget box, a second-hand Dell or HP off eBay is still better value.

It's also early days for the 8005 ecosystem, so BIOS maturity and broad OS support are things to watch.

What to do

Read the full STH review for benchmarks and thermals. If you're planning a new build around this platform, you'll want fast storage to match — our M.2 NVMe SSD Enclosure – USB-C 10Gbps with Magnetic Closure is handy for cloning or migrating drives during the process.
