ServeTheHome has published a full review of the ASRock Industrial AI Box-A395, one of the first commercial products built around AMD's Strix Halo APU — and it's worth paying attention to if you're thinking about local AI inference in a small footprint.
What it is
The AI Box-A395 is a compact industrial mini PC powered by the AMD Ryzen AI Max+ 395 (Strix Halo). The headline number is up to 128 GB of unified LPDDR5x memory shared between CPU and the integrated RDNA 3.5 GPU with 40 compute units. That's a serious amount of VRAM-equivalent memory for running large language models locally, without needing a discrete GPU.
Why homelabbers should care
If you've been eyeing up secondhand workstation GPUs just to get enough VRAM for local LLM inference, this is an alternative path. 128 GB of unified memory in a box that sips power compared to a full tower with a discrete card is genuinely appealing. It slots neatly into a homelab shelf, runs quiet, and consolidates your AI experimentation into one tidy node.
The integrated GPU won't match a dedicated NVIDIA card clock-for-clock on raw throughput, but for inference workloads — especially models that need more memory than speed — the memory pool is the real selling point.
Caveats
Pricing is the big one. Industrial-targeted hardware like this typically carries a steep premium over consumer mini PCs, and ASRock Industrial gear isn't always easy to source in the UK. Strix Halo laptops from ASUS ProArt PX13 or Framework Desktop Edition may end up being more accessible routes to the same silicon. Also, software support for the AMD iGPU in AI frameworks (ROCm, llama.cpp with Vulkan) is improving but still behind CUDA.
What to do
Read the full review for benchmarks and thermals. If you're building a compact homelab AI node, keep Strix Halo on your shortlist — but compare pricing carefully before committing. And if you're setting up any new compact build, a 240W USB-C Fast-Charging & Data Cable – Braided, LED Indicator keeps your desk tidy for USB-C powered peripherals alongside it.
